About Sterling Home

Our Story: From Mill to Home of Inspiration

Over 50 years ago, our founder George Knowles Snr transformed a disused paper mill in Tillicoultry into Scotland’s largest furniture showroom. Inspired by the innovation of out-of-town retail he had seen in America, he set out to create something truly unique: a destination where people could explore, imagine, and be inspired.

That pioneering spirit still drives us today. What began in a single converted mill has grown into a family-owned business with stores across Scotland. Our flagship in Tillicoultry remains at the heart of it all, now home to multiple showrooms, a garden centre, a homestore, and the Mill Café.
Still evolving, still inspiring.

Family at Our Core

Sterling has always been, at its heart, a family. We're proud to have inspired generations of homemakers, and many of our colleagues have been part of that journey for decades. This sense of belonging, care, and commitment is in our DNA. From our in-store teams to our head office, it's our people who make Sterling Home what it is.

Our Vision: Evolving with You

Homes and tastes have changed over the decades, from the Scandinavian styles of the 80s to today’s sleek, contemporary looks, and we’ve grown alongside them. What hasn’t changed is our ambition: to help you create a home you truly love.

Our rebrand to Sterling Home reflects that journey. We’re more than furniture; we’re here to inspire every aspect of your home, from the big statement pieces to the smallest finishing touches. Whatever your style, space, or stage of life, we want to be part of your story.

Make your home a Sterling Home.
