Shop homewaresOur story
It started with a disused paper mill and a big idea. Here are the moments that turned it into the Tillicoultry store you know today.
Store opens
Over 50 years ago, our founder George Knowles Snr transformed a disused paper mill in Tillicoultry into Scotland’s largest furniture showroom. Inspired by the innovation of out-of-town retail he had seen in America, he set out to create something truly unique: a destination where people could explore, imagine, and be inspired.
This first store was ahead of its time, a pioneering retail experience that has since become one of Scotland’s largest and most diverse furniture and homewares showrooms.
Expansion
At first, Sterling had just one showroom, what you know now as our Dining Hall. Expansive development added stairs to further floors, more showrooms and a restaurant. In 1982, Sterling opened its Garden Centre, adding to the growing complex.
Updated logos and branding
If you’ve been following us for a while, you’ll know Sterling has looked a little different throughout our lifetime. Each update has made our logo and name more modern and closer to who we are today.
As we evolved, so did our name. Sterling Home better reflects the full range of products and services we offer, from furniture to homewares and more. There’s something for every room and every style.
Multi-million-pound refurbishment
To mark over 50 years in Tillicoultry, the store underwent a multi-million-pound transformation, with even more inspiring spaces to explore. Inside, you’ll discover new exclusive sofa collections, one of the UK’s largest dining collections, a dedicated area for our Italian ranges, and an expanded homeware offer, giving more choice for every room of the home.
With 250,000 sq. ft to explore, it’s a place to unwind, explore and get inspired.
Come and see us
Whether you’re furnishing a whole house or just after the right lamp, come and take your time. Sit on the sofas, lie on the beds, and stop for a coffee and a scone when you need a breather. Our team will be glad to help, or to leave you to it.
